Big news... no MAJOR news!!!!

It is a well know fact that I am not very good with blogging. I'm on Facebook all the time, like 24/7 but I never blog. Well unless I have some major news I need to shout to the rooftops about. Today I do have such news! I have just signed up to do my very first author signing in March 2015, in Peterborough in the UK.

This is a MAJOR thing for me to do and I nearly didn't sign up. I mean, who wants to bother with the unknown sitting in the corner? Readers, that's who. Isn't that what these events are about? Meeting some of your favourites (did I mention Jodi Ellen Malpas will be there? ... Totally fan girling) and discovering new.

I'm super excited to be a part of this. To have the chance to speak with readers face to face and discuss my book(s), and then rub shoulders with some other amazingly talented authors to chat about this writing/book world that has consumed me, that is priceless.

So, I am putting my fears to one side and jumping on the signing wagon. If you are around on March 14th 2015 why not add the event to your calendar?

Happy 3 monthversary to Silver Lining

Boy, how times flies when you are having fun. 3 months ago today I officially became a self-published author when the Paperback for Silver Lining became available to purchase (the ebook was released 2 days later). It has been a crazy, and often emotional, roller coaster ride, but one I never want to get off. It may make me sick, it may make me dizzy but it also gives me the rush and the laughs and the joy of the ride. It has made me new and amazing friends as I waited in that queue edging toward the moment the safety bar came down and I was shot off at a billion miles an hour into those highs and lows, twists and turns, and occasionally even going backward. The beauty of it all though? Those new friends are also on the ride with me, along with a few others and together they support me when I want to scream and shout 'I want to get off'.

It's hard to say if Silver Lining is doing well, bad or indifferent. I have nothing to compare it to. But sometimes it's about more than a few figures or a royalty payment. Sometimes it's about embracing the connections you make, and through all this I have made some awesome connections with the amazing bloggers who work tirelessly to help promote your book, and all for a quick shout out or the occasional bit of swag. I know there are some downsides (I won't dwell on them)but I have to say it, I love this community of authors, bloggers and readers. So, to celebrate the fact that Silver Lining has now been out for 3 months, I have set up a giveaway on Goodreads to win a signed copy. Pop on over and enter:

Blog Tour 30th March - April 6th

Synopsis:

Amber Merchant had it all. Living with and engaged to her teenage sweetheart, nice house and job of her dreams.

Not anymore.
Following a devastating revelation from her Fiancé, Amber finds herself single once again and vows to never entrust her heart and soul to another.
After a bad experience on a rare night out to celebrate her newly single life, a chance encounter with a tall, dark and handsome stranger leaves Amber’s head reeling. Intrigued by her draw to him but scared for her heart she flees.
Twenty nine year old Craig Silver has been fighting demons of his own. Intent on a life of meaningless affairs and one night stands, he isn’t prepared for the overwhelming and immediate attraction, and desire to protect the striking blonde on the dance floor.
At first it seems the attraction is mutual… until she runs. Bewildered and frustrated Craig wonders if he will ever see her again.

Sometimes the roads to our future are paved with many trials. Will Amber take the right path and find the silver lining to the happiness she deserves?

 Excerpt:

“Are you alright, Pingu? You have a strange look on your face.” We are walking along the seafront towards the pier. It is a beautiful late May afternoon, and the sun is shining and glittering off the ripples cascading across the water. Gentle waves ebb and flow along the shoreline where children sit with their families building fortresses, and other unrecognisable structures, out of damp sand.

I stop walking and move around to stand in front of Craig, reaching my arms around his waist and snuggling into his chest. I take a deep breath in, inhaling his now familiar earthy scent mixed with the fresh smells of the sea air. “I’m perfect. This is perfect. Thank you.”

“You are perfect. I’m glad you recognise that.” He smiles as he looks down into my eyes and wraps his own arms around me. He places a kiss on my forehead, leaving his lips attached to my skin. Why did I spend so many years wasting my life on a man that basically thought he owned me but had no interest in really being with me? I have missed out on so many days like this.

Becki was right with what she said. I’m starting to see that everything does happen for a reason. Maybe I was meant to stay with David until now so that I could be right here, right now, with Craig. He really is my Silver Lining. He gives me hope and optimism for a brighter future, despite whatever issues he has going on at the moment.

We spend the next few hours strolling around town, looking in shops, chatting about anything and everything, and just enjoying being together. When my stomach suddenly growls rather loudly, letting me – and probably everyone else in Paignton – know that it’s time to eat, we grab some Fish and Chips and sit on the pier eating them. Craig wanted to take me into some fancy restaurant, but relented when I started ranting about not being able to come to the seaside and eat fish and chips out of the paper. “It’s a British tradition,” I argued.

With our stomachs full, we kick our shoes off and take a stroll along the sand. The beach is quieter now, the falling early evening temperatures driving families back to their hotels or wherever it is they came from.

“You’re a bit of a snob, do you know that?” I say to Craig as we walk along an almost deserted area of the beach. I’m walking backward, facing him and laughing.

“Oh yeah?” Craig quirks an eyebrow. “How’s that?”

“Only snobs would be snobbish about eating fish and chips and candy floss when they come to the seaside. These are staple Seaside requirements, Mr Silver, along with making sandcastles and… this...” I flick my foot in the shallow water and splash him.

“Oh, you’re in for it now,” he growls, staring into my eyes.

Shit, this isn’t good. He has a devilish look in his eyes that makes me want to jump on him and flee at the same time. I gulp when he flinches and as quickly as I can, turn on my heels and run away from him, squealing in laughter, running as fast as I can through the soft sand.

I’m laughing and trying to catch my breath while evading Craig’s attempts to catch me. When I hit a large ditch in the sand, I stumble, giving Craig the perfect opportunity to lunge forward and grab me around the waist. The momentum from his attack causes me to lose my balance and we both crash down onto the sand.

Turning over quickly onto my back so I can swipe the sand away from my face, I look up to see Craig leaning over me. He is breathing heavy, his chest rising and falling sharply with each laboured inhale and exhale. We are both laughing uncontrollably, trying to catch our breath. My heart skips a beat looking up at him. He looks so young and carefree; a stark contrast to his usual cool, calm and controlled demeanour.

Our eyes lock onto each other and the laughter immediately ceases. We simply remain frozen in time, lost in each other’s gaze. I vaguely hear music in the distance, the song being carried along by the gentle sea breeze. The words from “What About Now” by Daughtry filter into my emotion filled haze.

“Craig, I...” I’m cut off by a pair of soft, warm lips pressing down on mine. He doesn’t try and deepen the kiss, just remains hovering over me with our lips locked.

About the Author:

EJ Shortall was born and raised in London, England where she currently still lives with her long

suffering partner and their son.

Having worked in education for the better part of 12 years, EJ decided a change was needed and

following a moment of inspiration one morning, she decided to put pen to paper and start writing her

first novel.

She has always enjoyed reading, but found it was mostly just a holiday extravagance, to while away

the hours whilst relaxing on the beach or by the pool. Then she discovered a certain worldwide best

seller, and that was it, she was hooked. She couldn’t devour books fast enough. The books on her

book shelves and reading device range from sweet, Young Adult romances, to smouldering, erotic

encounters.

“I am on one amazing roller coaster ride at the moment, meeting new and wonderful people,

discovering new music gems to integrate into my stories, and learning so many new skills. I can’t wait

to see where this journey takes me.”

If you would like to join E.J. on her journey, please follow or contact her. She would love to hear

from you!

Silver Lining, EJ’s debut novel was released on 21st February 2014.

Indie Author Respect!

It has been a month since I hit publish and released Silver Lining to the world. Until recently I had never truly appreciated all that is involved in becoming an indie author. When I was happily content with 1-clicking my chosen books and then sitting back, a coffee in hand, getting lost in the amazing worlds these authors created for me, I was blissfully oblivious. Now I am one of those indie authors, I can honestly say how much I appreciate and respect the hard work of each and every person who has put pen to paper. This business isn't just about taping away on a keyboard, it's putting hearts and souls into stories, self-discovery, opening yourself up to the unknown. Then you type 'The End' and a whole new set of challenges faces you, cover designing, editing, formatting, uploading, promoting, networking... it's never ending. It's time consuming, often frustrating and sometimes draining (both emotionally and on the bank account!), but you now what? I love it!

I know I will probably never be a best selling author, I'm competing in an already over-saturated market, but I'm okay with that. I never started writing with that goal in mind. When I started writing Silver Lining I had no intention of publishing it, so to have sold the number of copies I have, and received the positive feedback I have, I feel, with this one at least, that I have achieved so much.

I now have to perform a balancing act of promotion, writing the sequel, being a mum and homeowner and performing my day job duties. It's tough! Know what, though? I wouldn't change a thing! I have met some amazing people, people like me releasing or recently released their debut's too, strangers who have read Silver Lining and enjoyed it, and then there are the awesome bloggers. I cannot sing high enough praises for the hard working, selfless people who are happy to post details about my unknown book alongside those of some amazing authors. It truly does humble me with the way I have been accepted by so many, no questions, they are just happy to share the love of books.

There are some not so nice sides of this too, but thankfully I have not been subjected to them so I won't dwell on them. I just wanted to put it out there that there is so much more to self publishing than most realise, and I, now more than ever, thank each and every author for what they do.

So next time you 1-click take a second to contemplate the work that has gone into that book and enjoy!

Crazy Whirlwind

Time for an update:

Since my last blog post things have been crazy busy. Silver Lining went live slightly earlier than anticipated so I spent the evening of Thursday 20th Feb in a bit of a daze. It was out there, MY book was out there for the world to see... CRAZY!

Since it's launch I've been busy doing the Social Media networking thing, it's the only way people are going to find out about Silver Lining and hopefully purchase it.

So far I'm happy with sales but I have nothing to compare it too so I guess only time will tell. In all honesty though, this isn't about the sales, this was about a girl, a fairly quiet, inhibited girl, that decided to go beyond her comfort zone and put herself out there on public display. And boy am I glad I did. This whole writing thing has opened up so many doors for me, and has introduced me to so many wonderful people that I wouldn't have met otherwise. And it's only going to get better!

After a bit of a blip with writing Silver Dove, the sequel to Silver Lining, I finally got back on the wagon yesterday and managed to get past the little road block I had going on there. Lets hope it's plain sailing now until the end. Although with a few twists and turns planned, I highly doubt it!

Let me leave you with some quotes from some of the wonderful reviews Silver Lining is receiving:

"This book will have you hooked and draw you in pretty fast, with some emotional and humorous parts, it is the perfect book." 5* - Summer Clark

"you have written this story extremely well, it has some sad parts and some very happy parts. You kept up with the emotion and makes the reader feel it as we read.

All in all a jolly good book.. :)" 4* - Kaprii Two Ordinary Girls and their books review

"a great book well written makes you laugh and cry trough out the story. love the characters . would reccomend it." 5* - Chris Donald

"was given this book for an honest review.. I thought it was really good and funny. very enjoyable read and just enough angst put in the book. a very good job done by the author and for it being their debut book well done. I enjoyed the book but it did take a couple chapters to hook me. but once I made it through those chapters I really enjoyed it. I really like the main female in the book
cant wait to read the next one." 4* - Rennee McKinney

Silver Lining excerpt

With the release of Silver Lining mere hours away, I thought it was about time I gave a bit more than a few short teasers. So here for your reading pleasure, I hope, is a longer excerpt:

He’s leaning back against my closed door with his arms and ankles folded, staring at me with heated eyes.
Oh my God, that look. It sends my pulse racing. My chest expands with each attempt to catch a breath, and heat pools at the pit of my stomach. “Craig, what are you doing?” I squeak out so quietly I’m not even sure he heard. I should be trying to cover myself up. I should be trying to shoo him out, but I’m doing neither. I can’t. I literally cannot move. I’m spellbound by his gaze on me.
Craig starts moving, or rather prowling, toward me, his eyes never once leaving mine. When he’s just a few feet away, he stops and slowly licks across his bottom lip. “Christ, Amber. I vowed I’d keep my hands to myself until I was sure you were ready for something more.” He tears his eyes from mine and slowly trails his gaze down my body. “You’re stunning. You know that? Absolute perfection. Why anyone would let you go is beyond me.” He takes the final few steps until he’s standing right in front of me, our bodies almost touching. “I’ve got to do it, Amber. I’ve got to taste you. I can’t wait anymore.” Before it registers what he’s doing, Craig has grabbed both of my wrists and is holding them together behind my back, secured by one of his large strong hands. His other hand moves up to sweep my hair away from my face and gently, he angles my head to give him better access to the sensitive areas around my collar bone and neck. “So beautiful,” he whispers as he trails feather like kisses from my temple downwards along my jaw, and finally resting on my lips.
I moan and slam my eyes shut when he gently nips and laps at my parted lips and navigates his tongue through every groove and curve of my mouth. When my own tongue meets his, tangling together in a sensual frenzy, I completely lose it and return his passion with my own unrestrained need for more. His fingers glide slowly down the side of my body and come to rest on my thigh with a light squeeze.
This feeling of being alone with him, half naked and totally at his mercy, has my body reacting in ways it never has before. Every lick from his tongue and every suck from his lips has me gasping for air. Every touch from his fingers leaves a trail of fire burning my skin, a raging inferno that can only be doused one way; a way that I’m not sure I’m ready for yet.
As Craig continues his frenzied assault on my lips and gentle massage of my thigh, I vaguely become aware of movement. The next moment, the backs of my thighs are hitting the bed and Craig is slowly lowering me back, never once breaking our kiss.
“Craig,” I whisper against his lips, “what are we doing? They’ll be waiting for us.”
“Shhh, let them wait. I need to do this.” He returns his lips to my neck and continues his licking and sucking torment as he slowly continues downward. When he traces his tongue along the upper swell of my breast and moves his hand to my inner thigh, my breathing stops completely. I want him to do more. No, I need him to do more. Fuck not being sure, I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. Right here, in this very moment, I need him. I need his lips to move lower on my breasts. I need his fingers to move higher up my thighs. I need him to strip me bare and make love to me until I scream for him to stop.
